Me duele el estomago (my stomach hurts)

After eating our salad quickly and watching the sun go down, Ryan knowing that this would be the best sunset we ever saw, with Ryan racing to get the camera, it will go down as "the one that got away". Perhaps it makes for a better story than it would photo, but it was spectacular.
We came back to the hotel in search of something to do, and they told us to go to Volcan Look, the largest disco outside of San Jose (although often quite empty). It wasn´t happening til 11 pm so in the meantime we got some of the best nachose we had ever eaten. They let you add steak or chicken to it for 1$, we chose the medium rare steak, which they cut into perfect little bits and sprinkled on top. Yumm. We also had another coffee and a couple drinks.

At Volcan Look, Ryan noted that the lights were acceptable, that the disco had been converted from a sports complex, and to sum the drinks up, he would prefer a little more rum with his coke.
We talked with a few other gringos, came home, went to bed and things went downhill for Ryan. He took a couple pills when we got home, and although the instructions noted that they contained yellow #5 that could cause allergic reactions, we figured it would be fine.

Come the morning, Ryan was feeling worse, getting sick two times before he registered for his last year at UBC. Its always strange to see a man in a vulnerable state like that, I never know quite what to do.

We went to the doctor down the street, who asked Ryan what he had been eating doing etc. He got a chuckle out of the "have you drank any alcohol" question. To which he replied "4 or 5". The doctor laughed out loud and suggested that perhaps Ryan drank so much that he couldn´t remember.

We have learned that for a happy stomach, we must:
-avoid rice
-avoid beans
-avoid bananas
-avoid alcohol??? especially guaro and especially when you are already sick!
-avoid the sun
-and that we must rest up for a couple days.

All of the above are difficult to avoid if not inevitable in costa rica, so ryan has his work cut out for him. Reflecting on his "illness" we are not sure exactly the cause of the vomiting. Maybe the alcohol, yellow #7 or food poisening from the amazing nachos.

Ryan got prescribed famotadina and pedialyte to nurse his body back to health, but at about noon he wasn´t feeling any better so I called and the doctor said to go to the pharmacy and get some Buscapan. That finally made his stomach not hurting, and we managed to feed him some chicken.

It came with tortillas, a half roasted chicken, guacamole, and a salad...as ryan nibbled timidly on the chicken breast and I ravenously tore into the rest of the chicken Ryan remarked that he had never been so envious to see me eat before.

We came back to nap and relax, and ended up falling asleep before 8pm, getting up this morning around 6.

We went to the Soda La Parada which is open all day and each had the american breakfast - fried eggs, bacon and toast with orange juice. It was good, but maybe a bit greasy for our taste. We bought some yogurt and granola to eat later and walked around a bit before returning to the hotel.

On day 7 of our trip, I lost my first item - sunglasses, right off my head!! I will blame ryan for making me wear the tilly hat so he didnt look like a goof wearing it all by himself. He has an extra pair i am going to wear for now.

While eating our yogurt we struck up a conversation with an American medical student who is here for some spanish medical school training or something. We are going to travel with them to Monteverde bright and early tomorrow morning and then if all goes well onto the nicoya peninsula. They have rented a car, so I think we are going to split gas and likely some of the cost of the vehicle. Another plus is that ryan won´t have to pay for medical advice for the next couple days (a visit that cost him $30 US, not much to pay for your health! But 30$ more than we are used to!).
